Tom Kirksey compiled the first El Paso-area bird checklist in 1938.  That checklist and its subsequent editions offer a window into the history of field ornithology in the El Paso area.  They reflect many changes in the abundance and seasonal occurrence of the region's birds, in taxonomy and nomenclature, and especially in our knowledge and understanding of the regional avifauna.  For a look at the past editions of the El Paso-area checklist:
